Digital Color Tips
When thinking of either a digitally printed product or a hybrid printed product that combines both digital and offset, several characteristics, if not understood, can lead to miscommunication if designing without digital in mind.
With a digitally printed product, take advantage of the wider gamut. Colors will typically be more vibrant when supplying RGB data. Black only is stronger than an offset rich black. Typically in offset, a rich black is composed of 100 K, 40 C, 30 M, 30 Y whereas the iGen setting of 100K, 0 C, 0 M, 0 Y will produce the strongest black. The difference between an uncoated stock and a coated stock is less apparent on the iGen because it is toner based. Wet inks in offset will be absorbed into the stock, unlike a coated stock where the ink lies on top of the sheet.
When designing a printed piece for digital, keep in mind that using large areas of tints can be problematic. Maintaining an even hue in large tinted areas can be difficult. Try to break up the design to avoid large tinted areas. This would also apply to gradients.

Due to the smaller gamut of the offset press, you are limited to how close you are capable of reaching the actual spot color using CMYK inks.
A two dimensional view of the gamut boundaries. The green outline is the iGen3 gamut versus the red outline for an offset press.

A three dimensional view of the gamut volume. The multi color wire frame is the iGen3 gamut versus the white wire frame for an offset press.
The iGen3 has the ability to better match Pantone spot colors out of process than an offset press due to its larger gamut. Vector art and text bypass the ICC profile and can be adjusted using the spot color editor directly on the press without having to edit the document. In order to do this all spot colors must remain as a spot and not broken out into process breaks.
